Petrofac Secures FEED for Netherlands Aramis CCS Project

Last Updated on 25th June 2024

Petrofac has initiated a multi-million-dollar FEED (front-end engineering design) for the Aramis Carbon Capture Storage project in the Netherlands. Aramis is a joint venture involving TotalEnergies, Shell, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), and Gasunie.

The project's objective is to capture carbon dioxide from industrial centers and transport it for permanent storage in a depleted offshore gas field beneath the North Sea. This initiative provides a pathway to decarbonization for hard-to-abate industries in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.

The captured CO2 will be transported to a collection hub in the Port of Rotterdam through an onshore pipeline or ship. Following temporary storage and compression, the CO2 will then be transported to multiple offshore facilities via a pipeline with the capacity to handle up to 22 million metric tons of CO2 annually.

In addition, Petrofac has formed partnerships with Peritus International and offshore independents in the Netherlands. Peritus International will oversee the offshore trunkline design, while offshore independents will handle the landfall design and the offshore installation analysis.

About Aramis CCS Project

The Aramis CCS project is a large-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate industries in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. It involves capturing CO2 from industrial sources, transporting it via a dedicated pipeline to depleted offshore gas fields in the North Sea, and permanently storing it deep underground.

The project will contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 22 million metric tons per year. A FID (final investment decision) is expected in 2024, with operations potentially starting in 2027.
