Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, limited and Worley secured the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract for the United Kingdom's first carbon capture storage plant at a cement production facility. The contract was awarded for the Padeswood CCS project. The carbon capture facility will store up to 800,000 tons of CO2 annually from the cement plant. The plant will commence operations by 2028.
The project is part of the HyNet CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage) cluster in the north-west of the UK, which plans to capture up to 800,000 tons of CO2 annually from flue gas produced during the cement manufacturing process and store it in a depleted gas field off Liverpool Bay.
The project was also selected as a specific CO2 capture and storage project by the UK Government to promote decarbonization in the cement industry, which in the hard-to-abate sector means the difficulty of reducing CO2 in the production process.
The UK government has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. In line with this initiative, the requisite infrastructure, including the formation of CCUS clusters, is being developed to carry out all related processes—from CO2 capture to transportation and storage at each of the country's targeted industrial zones.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is a leading industrial company involved in various sectors, including power generation, shipbuilding, and aerospace. The company also plays a significant role in Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technologies, aiming to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality.
MHI offers the KM CDR Process, an amine-based technology that captures over 95% of CO2 from combustion gas sources. They are also exploring other capture methods, like membrane separation and adsorption.
MHI has expertise in engineering and manufacturing compressors and carriers for safe and efficient CO2 transportation over long distances. Check out our database to learn more about MHI's CCU projects globally.
