Shell Takes Final Investment Decision on 100 MW Green Hydrogen Project in Germany

Shell has made a final investment decision on REFHYNE II, a 100 MW green hydrogen project at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland in Germany. Construction will begin this fall, and operations are expected to start in 2027. The total project cost is around USD 161 million.

REFHYHNE II will be one of the largest green hydrogen facilities in the world and will produce up to 44 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, which corresponds, for example, to the fuel requirement for about 550,000 kilometers of transport with zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell semi-trailers.

Furthermore, green hydrogen from REFHYNE II will be used at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park to produce energy products such as transport fuels with a lower carbon intensity. In the longer term, green hydrogen from REFHYNE II could be directly supplied to help lower regional industrial emissions as customer demand evolves.

Investment Details

The European Commission's European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) is responsible for funding the REFHYNE II project. The project costs around USD 161.7 million, with a USD 34 million grant from the EU Horizon 2020 program.
