Qatar's Largest Petrochemical Project: $6 Billion Ras Laffan Complex Begins Construction

Last Updated on 19th February 2024

Qatar Energy started the construction of the USD 6 billion Ras Laffan Petrochemical Complex. His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, laid the foundation stone for the Ras Laffan Petrochemical Complex. The petrochemical complex will raise Qatar’s overall petrochemical production capacity to about 14 million tons per year. The 435-acre petrochemical complex is expected to start operations by 2026. Furthermore, the groundbreaking ceremony was held in Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar.

The project is a joint venture between Qatar Energy and Chevron Phillips. QatarEnergy owns a 70% equity share, and Chevron Phillips Chemical owns 30%.

The complex will house an ethane cracker with a capacity of 2.1 million tons per year of ethylene, making it the largest in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world. This will raise Qatar’s ethylene production capacity by more than 40%. It also includes two polyethylene trains with a combined annual output of 1.7 million tons of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer products, raising Qatar’s overall production by about 50%.

A joint venture between Samsung Engineering Co., Ltd. and CTCI Corporation will handle the engineering, procurement, and construction of the ethane cracker. Tecnimont S.p.A. will execute engineering, procurement, and construction for the polyethylene units. The facility will be constructed with modern, energy-saving technology and use ethane for feedstock, which, along with other measures, is expected to result in lower greenhouse gas emissions than similar global facilities.Qatar Energy
