GreenGo Energy has filed an application with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mines in Mauritania for the development of the Megaton Moon Project. Once completed, the Megaton Moon Project will be one of the world’s largest green energy parks, which will be visible from outer space.
The project has a unique architecture that honors the Mauritanian flag. The crescent-shaped green energy park will be strategically located near the capital city of Nouakchott and will cover an area of 150,000 hectares.
The Megaton Moon project will produce 60 GW of wind and solar power, which will also power an upcoming desalination plant. Additionally, the project will have a 35-GW green hydrogen plant that will produce 4 MTPA of green hydrogen and 18 MTPA of green ammonia. Furthermore, the first pilot stage is expected to be commercially operational by 2028, and the last stage will be operational by 2033–2035.
For the Megaton Moon project, GreenGo Energy will partner with COWI and New Power Partners for engineering, development, and infrastructure design. Anders Heine Jensen, Head of Global Megaton Development, stated that developing a project of this magnitude requires close cooperation with the supply chain and partners in offtake agreements. He also added that to ensure the supply chain is in place, the Megaton project will be implemented in three main stages.
The CEO of GreenGo Energy stated that Mauritania is ideal for the development of a green hydrogen hub for a variety of reasons, such as large areas of suitable flat land and coastal proximity for water and shipping. “The region has some of the most operator-friendly fiscal policies on the continent,” he added. Additionally, the project will utilize 10 TWh+ of surplus power to develop large-scale, local desert farming, which will boost regional development. The upcoming desalination plant will produce 70 million tons of water, which will be supplied across the region.

Mauritania is poised to become a major player in the production of green hydrogen, with several large-scale projects in the pipeline. These projects are expected to help the country achieve its ambitious goal of becoming a net exporter of green hydrogen by 2030. These projects are expected to produce millions of tons of green hydrogen per year, which could be used to export energy, decarbonize industries, and create jobs.
Here are some of the key green hydrogen projects in Mauritania:
Numerous factors, such as the nation's plentiful renewable energy resources, proximity to Europe, and supportive governmental policies, are driving the development of green hydrogen projects in Mauritania. Mauritania has vast amounts of solar and wind energy potential, which can be used to produce green hydrogen using electrolysis. The country is also located close to Europe, which is a major market for green hydrogen.
Finally, the Mauritanian government has been supportive of the development of green hydrogen projects and has put in place a number of incentives to attract investment.
