Al Ruwais Industrial City in UAE to Get a Green Ammonia Plant

Last Updated on 24th June 2024

TA’ZIZ has awarded the construction contract for its 1 million tons per annum (mtpa) low-carbon ammonia production facility situated in Al Ruwais Industrial City. TA’ZIZ and its partners Fertiglobe, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and GS Energy Corporation awarded the construction contract to MAIRE Tecnimont.

The facility is set to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in low-carbon fuels and capitalize on the growing demand for low-carbon ammonia as a carrier fuel for clean hydrogen. Construction is set to begin in the third quarter of 2024, with operations scheduled to commence in 2027. A significant portion of the construction award value is expected to flow back into the UAE’s economy under ADNOC’s In-Country Value (ICV) program.

A preliminary life cycle assessment study estimates that Phase 1 of the plant will produce 50% lower-carbon intensity ammonia compared to conventional ammonia. In the second stage, the plant will further reduce its carbon intensity by capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide emissions. The plant will  play a pivotal role in increasing production capacity in the ammonia market.

Mashal Saoud Al-Kindi, CEO of TA’ZIZ, said, “As a key transition fuel, ammonia is used in a range of energy applications and represents an unparalleled opportunity to bridge the gap between traditional energy sources and a low-carbon future.”

TA’ZIZ prioritizes the domestic production of six chemicals: ammonia, methanol, ethylene dichloride, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride monomer and caustic, setting the foundation for manufacturing hundreds of new end-products in the UAE for the first time, unlocking further diversification and industrialization opportunities in the country. This phase is projected to create a multi-billion dollar investment in the country’s GDP and generate thousands of jobs in the next 20 years.

With a mandate to position the UAE as a global chemicals leader, TA’ZIZ has initiated the design process for a future, multi-billion dollar expansion that will more than double its Phase 1 production capacity and increase its focus on decarbonization through CCUS projects in the UAE.

Facts About TA’ZIZ

TA’ZIZ is an industrial ecosystem strategically located in the Al Ruways industrial city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The name TA’ZIZ, which in Arabic signifies advancement, strengthening, or creating a foundation, aptly reflects the initiative's mission to bolster the UAE's industrial transformation.

This ambitious project is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and ADQ, one of the region's largest holding companies, and was announced in November 2020.

The first phase of the project involves potential investment projects amounting to more than USD 5 billion, with initial chemical production expected in 2025. This phase will mark the development of the Ruwais Derivatives Park and act as a catalyst for the UAE’s economic diversification and technology-led growth.

The TA’ZIZ Industrial Ecosystem is designed to drive, support, and enable the growth of the Ruwais Industrial Complex and Abu Dhabi’s chemicals, advanced manufacturing, and industrial sectors. It comprises three main zones: the Industrial Chemicals Zone, the Light Industrials Zone, and the Industrial Services Zone.

Industrial Chemicals Zone

This zone is set to host global chemical production facilities. It is a critical component of TA’ZIZ, as it aims to attract significant foreign direct investment and establish the UAE as a globally competitive chemicals hub. The collaboration with PROMAN AG to develop the UAE’s first world-scale methanol production facility at the TA’ZIZ Industrial Chemicals Zone is a testament to the project's scale and ambition.

Light Industrials Zone

The Light Industrials Zone will accommodate downstream conversion industries. These industries will convert the outputs of the Chemical Zone into consumable products, thereby creating a value-added manufacturing base within the UAE.

Industrial Services Zone

This zone will house an ecosystem of companies providing all the necessary services required by the TA’ZIZ industrial zones and the wider Al Ruways industrial city. It will offer a range of services, including logistics, to support the operational needs of the industrial complexes.
