Project Overview

The Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway is an infrastructure project developed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is a 624 km-long expressway, of which 64% will be greenfield construction, and the remaining 36% will be brownfield construction.

This six-lane, access-controlled, under-construction expressway will cut travel time to 6 hours once completed (expected by 2026). It is also known as the NH-544G, or Bangalore-Kadapa-Vijayawada (BKV) Expressway, as it passes through Kadapa.

The expressway will pass through key districts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It starts from Kodikonda in Andhra Pradesh, connecting Bangalore, and ends at Vijayawada. The expressway will also connect to major national highways, such as National Highway-44 and National Highway-16.

Upon full completion, the expressway is expected to improve connectivity for Prakasam’s agricultural and industrial belts, easing the faster movement of farm products to markets of Vijayawada, Bangalore, and ports on the east coast.

Project Background

The Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway (also known as the BKV Expressway) is a project developed by NHAI under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase II. In 2021, the Government of Andhra Pradesh submitted a detailed proposal to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for an expressway connecting Bangalore to Vijayawada via Kadapa.

The Government of India approved the proposal in August 2021. The initial plan was to construct a 514 km-long expressway, with 404 km as a new greenfield section primarily in Andhra Pradesh, and the remaining 110 km utilizing upgrades to existing highways.

The project was revised again in September 2022 by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It declared the expressway as NH-544G. Now, the new length of the expressway is 624 km, with 518 km being a greenfield stretch.

Tenders for the project were invited in September 2022 under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), where contractors receive annuity payments post-completion. Land acquisition commenced in December 2022, with NHAI acquiring over 4,000 hectares. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project on 11 March 2024.

Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway Status & Completion Date

As of January 2025, the Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway is an under-construction project expected to be completed in 2026. Civil works, including earthworks, embankment construction, bridges, flyovers, and asphalt surfacing, are advancing rapidly, particularly in Andhra Pradesh districts such as Kurnool, Kadapa, Prakasam, and Guntur. Divided into 14 packages, none of them is operational yet.

Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway Latest News

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) achieved a major milestone under the Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway Construction project. On 6 January 2026, NHAI achieved two Guinness World Records for laying Bituminous Concrete on the Vanavolu–Vankarakunta section of the 6-lane Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Economic Corridor.

It includes the 28.95 km-long distance lane of Bituminous Concrete laid continuously within 24 hours, and 10,675 metric tonnes, the highest quantity of Bituminous Concrete constantly laid within 24 hours.

Both these awards are the first-ever Guinness World Records in their respective categories. The achievement spotlights India’s commitment to building world-class National Highway infrastructure.

Benefits

The following are the benefits of the project:

  • Reduce Travel Time: Once fully operational, the expressway will halve travel time. Currently, it takes approximately 12 hours to travel. Upon operation, the 624 km long distance will be covered in just 6 hours.

  • Reduce Traffic: The expressway will replace the highly congested NH44 and NH16 routes, which are vulnerable to traffic congestion, signal delays, and monsoon damage. Overall, reducing traffic and ensuring efficient transport.

  • Boosts Trade: It boosts trade, logistics, and supply chains between Bangalore’s manufacturing hubs and Vijayawada's ports/agriculture.

  • Reduce Logistics Costs: The expressway will significantly reduce logistics costs by enabling faster delivery of goods.

  • Improves South India Integration: The expressway ultimately improves South India Integration, including links to eastern ports and NH-16.

Conclusion

The Bangalore Vijayawada Expressway is an under-construction project developed by NHAI as a brownfield and greenfield stretch. It is a 624 km-long, six-lane expressway expected to be completed by 2026.

Developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase II, the NHAI achieved two Guinness World Records for laying Bituminous Concrete. This achievement marks India’s commitment to building world-class National Highway infrastructure.

It implements strong economic growth across 11 districts, spurring investments in warehousing, MSMEs, and real estate while reducing regional logistics costs. Overall, it improves South India's integration, enhances trade efficiency, and supports national goals for faster, greener mobility.
