Project Overview

The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is a road infrastructure project developed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is a 63 km-long expressway connecting the twin cities of UP, Lucknow and Kanpur. The six-lane Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is also known as National Expressway 6 (NE-6).

It starts at Shaheed Path in Lucknow and ends at Azad Chauraha near the Ganga Bridge in Kanpur.  It will be able to cover the distance in 45 minutes. The expressway is built using the Automated Intelligence Machine Guided Construction (AIMGC) method.

This under-construction expressway is expected to be fully operational by March 2026. Once operational, it is expected to redirect city traffic to the expressway, reducing congestion and improving overall health and air quality.

Project Background

The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway, also known as the Awadh Expressway, prepared and finalized the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in November 2018. It was prepared by the Egis India Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd. The initial foundation stone was laid in March 2019.

The expressway was designated as a National Expressway (NE-6) by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways in December 2020. It approved the expressway construction plan in December 2021 and began construction in January 2022 under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract.

The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is part of the UP government's extensive development initiatives, which also include the Ganga Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and Purvanchal Expressway.

Lucknow Kanpur Expressway Opening Date

The initial completion date for the Lucknow Kanpur Expressway was 30 November 2025. But due to the delays, the expressway is now expected to be fully completed by March 2026. The work is almost completed, with the final work remaining in Scooter India Crossings in Lucknow.

Benefits

The following are the benefits of the expressway:

  • Reduce Travel Time: With a speed of 120 km/hr, the expressway reduces travel time from nearly 1.5 hours to 45 minutes.

  • Relieve Traffic: The expressway eases congestion on NH-25 by rerouting nearly 50-60% traffic away from the national highway.

  • Expressway Capacity: It can accommodate up to 40,000 vehicles per day, including long-distance commuters and freight traffic.

  • Broader Connectivity: The expressway connects to the Ganga Expressway and the Lucknow Ring Road, providing broader connectivity.

  • Boost Economy: The expressway boosts trade, logistics, and industrial access between Lucknow and Kanpur's manufacturing hubs. Along with it, the expressway improves business viability in real estate, tourism, and investment along the corridor.

  • Focuses on Safety & Sustainability: The expressway prioritizes advanced safety measures, including surveillance, digital signage, and IRC-compliant design. It also comprises green belts, noise barriers, and efficient drainage for environmental integration.

  • Job Opportunities: The UP Government plans to turn the expressway into a startup corridor, which will ultimately create jobs. It is a part of a broader plan by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to make Uttar Pradesh an innovative hub.

Conclusion

The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is a National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) project, aiming to redirect city traffic to the expressway, reducing congestion and overall improving health and atmosphere. It is a 63 km-long expressway connecting the twin cities of UP, Lucknow & Kanpur, with a travel time of just 45 minutes upon its operation.

It starts from the Shaheed Path and ends at Azad Chauraha in Kanpur. Specifically, the expressway is designed using the Automated Intelligence Machine-Guided Construction (AIMGC) method, resulting in long-lasting performance without requiring major repairs. This is the first time this smart technology has been used for road building in India.

Overall, the project unlocks industrial growth, real estate booms, and logistics efficiencies, positioning the twin cities as a unified growth engine while exemplifying the success of NHAI's EPC model at a cost of INR 4,700 crore.
