Project Overview
The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is a road infrastructure project developed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It is a 63 km-long expressway connecting the twin cities of UP, Lucknow and Kanpur. The six-lane Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is also known as National Expressway 6 (NE-6).
It starts at Shaheed Path in Lucknow and ends at Azad Chauraha near the Ganga Bridge in Kanpur. It will be able to cover the distance in 45 minutes. The expressway is built using the Automated Intelligence Machine Guided Construction (AIMGC) method.
This under-construction expressway is expected to be fully operational by March 2026. Once operational, it is expected to redirect city traffic to the expressway, reducing congestion and improving overall health and air quality.
Project Background
The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway, also known as the Awadh Expressway, prepared and finalized the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in November 2018. It was prepared by the Egis India Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd. The initial foundation stone was laid in March 2019.
The expressway was designated as a National Expressway (NE-6) by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways in December 2020. It approved the expressway construction plan in December 2021 and began construction in January 2022 under an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract.
The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway is part of the UP government's extensive development initiatives, which also include the Ganga Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and Purvanchal Expressway.
Lucknow Kanpur Expressway Opening Date
The initial completion date for the Lucknow Kanpur Expressway was 30 November 2025. But due to the delays, the expressway is now expected to be fully completed by March 2026. The work is almost completed, with the final work remaining in Scooter India Crossings in Lucknow.
