Vedanta Aluminium, one of the largest aluminium producers in the world, has announced a significant expansion of its alumina refining capacity at its Lanjigarh refinery in Odisha. This move is part of the company's ongoing efforts to be among the top three global players in aluminium production.

The company has successfully commissioned a new 1.5 million metric tons per year (MTPA) expansion at its world-class alumina refinery. This expansion increases the refinery's production capacity from the existing 2 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA. This additional capacity is part of the company's ongoing expansion plan to increase the overall nameplate capacity at the Lanjigarh refinery to 5 MTPA.

This expansion aims to enhance raw material security and reduce costs for the Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. It is a significant step towards achieving 100% vertical integration. The company's CEO, John Slaven, emphasized the move's significance for vertical integration and its role in positioning the company for sustainable growth within the global aluminium market.

Objectives of the Expansion

 

Enhancing Production Capacity

The company has commissioned a new 1.5 million tonnes per year (MTPA) expansion at its world-class alumina refinery. This increases the refinery's production capacity from the existing 2 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA. This additional capacity is part of the company's ongoing expansion plan to increase the overall nameplate capacity at the Lanjigarh refinery to 5 MTPA.

The expansion aims to enhance raw material security and reduce costs for the Jharsuguda and BALCO aluminium smelters. It is a significant step towards achieving 100% vertical integration. 

 

Increasing Aluminum Production

Vedanta plans to increase its aluminium production capacity to 3 MTPA from the current 2.37 MTPA. This is in line with the company's goal to be among the top three global players in aluminium production.
