US To Fund $3.5 Billion to Boost America’s Electric Grid System

Last Updated on 08th January 2024

The US will invest USD 3.46  Billion for 58 projects across 44 states to strengthen electric grid resilience, which will help to deploy more clean energy solutions across America. The government will invest in 400 microgrids, and the investment is expected to distribute more than 35 gigawatts of new renewable energy to American homes. Apart from this 75% of the projects have partnerships with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers union and the aim is to maintain and create union jobs. It was the first phase of selections under the USD 10.5 billion grid resilience and innovation partnerships program  (GRIP) managed by the Department of Energy.

“Today's announcement represents the largest-ever direct investment in critical grid infrastructure, supporting projects will harden systems, and improve energy reliability and affordability,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. Some projects are focused on expanding transmission across multiple states, including California, Arizona, and Washington.

What is the GRIP program?

Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships Program managed by the Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office provides funds to modernize the electric grid to reduce the impacts of natural disasters and extreme weather worsened by climate change. The total estimated funding for the program is around USD 10.5 billion. The main goal of the GRIP program is to expand America’s power grid while creating good-paying jobs and building community climate resilience.

Other Key projects announced

The announcement also came with several projects anchored by the inter-regional collaboration that is set to expand transmission across multiple states.  This includes the Joint Interconnection Queue Transmission Study Process and Portfolio (JTIQ). This project will plan, design, and construct five transmission projects across seven midwest states, which include Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, Minnesota, Missouri, and South Dakota.

Wildfire Assessment and Resilience Networks (WARN) is a joint venture between Holy Cross Energy and  NRECA Research, which will launch a wildfire mitigation project with a consortium of 39 small, rural, not-for-profit electric co-ops in the high-threat areas. The project's key focus is to deploy fire-resistant grid infrastructure.

Earlier this year, the Department of Energy announced USD 95 million in federal funds from the program to harden the energy grids in Hawaii and enable them to resist severe weather conditions.
