Tower Semiconductor Plans to Develop $8 Billion Semiconductor Fabrication Plant in India

Israeli semiconductor manufacturer Tower Semiconductor has submitted its proposal to establish a semiconductor fabrication facility in India worth around USD 8 billion. The Government of India is currently analyzing and assessing Tower's proposal. The semiconductor manufacturing facility aims to produce 65 nm and 40 nm chips, which will find applications in sectors such as automotive and wearable electronics.

This project aligns with India's USD 10 billion semiconductor scheme launched in December 2021, which offers subsidies and support to attract chipmakers. Tower Semiconductor seeks government support, potentially including the 50% capital expenditure subsidy promised under the scheme.

This could translate to a potential $4 billion contribution from the Indian government, making the project even more attractive to Tower. Additionally, the chosen state within India might offer further incentives, such as tax breaks and infrastructure support.

However, challenges remain. Previous attempts to attract chipmakers with incentives have faced difficulties, resulting in some proposals stalling or being scrapped. Moreover, securing land, water, and other resources for such a large-scale project could pose logistical hurdles.
