Tata Group, Texas Instruments Among the Bidders for $1 Billion Mohali Semiconductor Lab Modernization

Last Updated on 25th June 2024

Tata Group, Tower Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments are among the nine companies that have reportedly submitted bids to the government to modernize the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.

Established in 1976, SCL Mohali commenced chip production in 1984. It is the only chip manufacturing facility in India dedicated to producing chips for strategic and defense applications. The facility mainly manufactures 180 nm node chips, which have very limited applications. The government earmarked USD 1 billion for its modernization. Expressions of interest were invited last year in September.

In the document, the government specified that chips from the Mohali Semiconductor Lab would continue to fulfill the needs of government agencies like the Indian Space Research Organization. Moreover, the bidder will be required to meet the end-to-end set-up and operationalization of the lab.

The development comes at a time when Tata Group has recently declared plans to establish a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Dholera. Tower Semiconductors has also been very keen to set up a semiconductor manufacturing facility in India.
