Major Fabless Semiconductor Firms in South Korea to Merge

Last Updated on 24th June 2024

South Korean fabless semiconductor developers Rebellions Inc. and Sapeon Korea Inc. have announced their merger plans. Rebellions Inc., a startup known for its ATOM chip, is a South Korean semiconductor industry pioneer. The ATOM chip, which entered mass production this year, is the first neural processing unit (NPU) developed in South Korea for use in data centers, particularly for large language models (LLMs).

Rebellions will be responsible for managing the merged entity, integrating both companies' teams and technologies to optimize performance and innovation. The merger is expected to be signed during the third quarter of this year, with the launch of the combined company anticipated by the end of 2024.

On the other hand, Sapeon Korea Inc., a subsidiary of SK Telecom Co., unveiled its next-generation X330 AI chip last November, marking another significant advancement in the field. The merger is a calculated effort to create a formidable entity capable of competing on the global stage.

SK Telecom Co., the parent company of Sapeon, has stated that the merger aims to position the merged company as a leader in the AI semiconductor market within the next two to three years. This period is seen as a critical window of opportunity for South Korea to assert its presence in the fiercely competitive AI landscape. The merger will play a pivotal role in the fabless semiconductor industry.

The combined company will focus on strengthening its position in the development of neural processing units (NPU), which are crucial for AI applications. NPUs are specialized hardware designed to efficiently process the complex algorithms required for machine learning and artificial intelligence tasks. By merging, Rebellions and Sapeon aim to leverage their respective technological advancements and expertise to innovate and scale their NPU offerings.

This merger comes at a pivotal time when the demand for AI chips is skyrocketing due to their increasing penetration into various applications. Nvidia currently holds a monopoly in the global AI chip market. The company plans to invest over USD 250 billion in data center equipment and software for AI applications. However, the move by Rebellions and Sapeon signals a growing trend of regional players seeking to challenge the status quo and offer alternative solutions in the AI hardware market.

What are Neural Processing Units?

Neural Processing Units (NPUs) are specialized hardware accelerators designed to significantly enhance the performance and efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to, deep learning, neural network computations, and various data-intensive applications such as natural language processing, image and speech recognition, and autonomous systems.

At their core, NPUs are built to handle the parallel processing demands of AI algorithms, which involve a vast amount of data computation that is typically beyond the capabilities of general-purpose CPUs.

About Sapeon

Sapeon is a trailblazer in the fabless semiconductor industry. Sapeon designs and develops hardware such as the Sapeon X330, a high-performance AI inference processor, but does not own the fabrication facilities (fabs) to produce the physical chips. Instead, they rely on third-party semiconductor factories around the world for production. This allows Sapeon to focus on innovation and design while leveraging the manufacturing expertise of firms like TSMC, Samsung, and SK Hynix.

About Rebellions

Rebellions Inc., a South Korean fabless semiconductor firm, has been making waves in the AI chip industry. Established in 2020, Rebellions has focused on developing advanced AI chips to power a range of applications, from large language models to data center operations. Their innovative approach has positioned them as a potential rival to industry giants like Nvidia.

Rebellions' notable achievements include the development of an AI system-on-chip named ATOM, which supports large language models. Their collaboration with Samsung using a 5-nm process signifies their commitment to cutting-edge technology and mass production capabilities.
