RWE Makes Investment Decision on Nordseecluster Offshore Wind Projects in Germany

Last Updated on 24th June 2024

RWE has made an investment decision on the 1.6 GW Nordseecluster offshore wind farms in Germany. The Nordseecluster project is about 50 kilometers north of the island of Juist, situated in the German North Sea. The project is implemented in two phases: Nordsee Cluster A and B.

The construction of Nordseecluster A, with a capacity of 660 MW, will commence in 2025, with full commissioning planned for the beginning of 2027. The construction of Nordseecluster B, with a capacity of 900 MW, is expected to begin in 2027, with full commissioning to occur at the beginning of 2029. Additionally, Vestas will provide 104 wind turbines for the Nordsee cluster, with cluster A having 44 and cluster B having 60, respectively, generating around 6.5 TWh of electricity per year.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, said, “Our portfolio already includes six offshore wind farms off Germany’s coastlines. The Nordseecluster will add two more. This sends a good signal for the energy transition in Germany and RWE.”

RWE does not have to make lease payments to the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) for the Nordseecluster sites. The cluster size will provide synergy effects for RWE in the construction and subsequent operation of the offshore wind farms in Germany

The generated renewable energy from offshore wind farms will support its industrial customers on the path to decarbonization with customized energy solutions. These customers increasingly include operators of AI data centers.

The company has developed around 19 offshore wind farms worldwide, with six off the German coast. RWE has set itself the goal of tripling its global offshore wind capacity from 3.3 GW to 10 GW in 2030.

The Nordseecluster combines wind farm sites in the eastern part of the German North Sea into a 1.6 GW offshore wind project. The combination of those sites opens up unique economies of scale. Some key components have already been manufactured for Nordseecluster A. The two phases are divided into 4 clusters: NC1, NC2, NC3, and NC4.
