Ocean Winds, an international company dedicated to global offshore wind projects, which is a 50-50 joint venture between ENGIE and EDF Renewables, secured a feasibility license for a 150-square-kilometer area from the Australian Government to develop an offshore wind farm in waters off Gippsland, Victoria.
The offshore wind project will play a key role in achieving the State of Victoria’s target of 95% renewable energy by 2035. Ocean Winds was granted the feasibility licence through its bidding company, High Sea Wind Pty Ltd.
The High Sea Wind project will represent an installed capacity of 1.3 GW, the equivalent of a year of electricity for 1 million Victorian households, avoiding up to 5.3 million tons of CO2 emissions per year. This new bottom-fixed offshore wind project in Australia will unlock opportunities in a key new market for Ocean Winds.
The High Sea Wind project will be delivered with the support of Ocean Winds expertise, which includes about 18 GW of offshore wind projects worldwide. ENGIE has been operating in Australia since 1996 and is deeply involved in the country's energy transition, with 315 MW of renewable energy and storage solutions in operation and more than 3 GW of renewable energy projects under development.
Ocean Winds is a joint venture between EDP Renováveis and ENGIE, two major players in the renewable energy sector. The company was created in 2020 and is headquartered in Madrid. Ocean Winds aims to become a world leader in offshore wind power, with 14 offshore wind projects across the world. The company has an offshore wind power portfolio totaling 14.5 GW, which includes operations, construction, and advanced development phases.
