Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is scheduled to launch Stage-I (2x800 MW) of NTPC’s USD 2 billion Lara Super Thermal Power Station and lay the foundation stone for Stage-II (2x800 MW) of NTPC’s Lara Super Thermal Power Project in Raigarh district, Chhattisgarh, through video conferencing on February 24, 2024.
Stage-I will be equipped with highly-efficient Super Critical technology, while Stage-II will utilize Ultra Super Critical technology. These advancements will lead to relatively lower specific coal consumption and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.
The installation of this project is generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region. Furthermore, NTPC is actively undertaking various community development initiatives in nearby areas, focusing on education, drinking water, sanitation, healthcare, and women’s empowerment.
Stage-I of the station is built with an investment of approximately USD 2 billion (INR 15,800 crores), and Stage-II of the project will be constructed on the available land of Stage-I. Thus, no additional land would be required for the expansion. Stage-II will entail an investment of USD 1.8 billion (INR 15,530 crores).
The project's genesis began with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NTPC and the Chhattisgarh government in July 2009. This MoU outlined the development of a 4,000 MW power plant in the state.
The initial plan envisioned a five-unit power plant with each unit generating 800 MW, totaling a capacity of 4,000 MW. This ambitious project aimed to significantly contribute to India's growing energy needs.
While 50% of the power from both Stages I & II is allocated to the state of Chhattisgarh, the project will play a crucial role in improving the power scenario in several other states, such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman & Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The project's 3,200 MW capacity upon completion will significantly contribute to bridging the power gap and ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.
Coal for this pit-head power station/project will be supplied from NTPC’s Talaipalli Coal Block through the Merry-Go-Round (MGR) system, thus ensuring the country's supply of low-cost electricity with 24x7 availability.
Merry Go Round System |
In September 2023, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Merry-Go-Round (MGR) system, a 65-km long electrified conveyor belt connecting the Talaipalli coal mine to the Lara Super Thermal Power Station. This innovative system ensures the reliable and cost-effective transportation of coal, minimizing the environmental footprint and contributing to cleaner power generation. |
