Ørsted Secures Licences to Develop Large-scale Offshore Wind Projects in Australia

Last Updated on 24th June 2024

The Australian Government has announced that it has granted a feasibility license for Ørsted’s first offshore wind farm in Australia and intends to grant a license for a second project, subject to consultation. With the licenses, Ørsted aims to develop large-scale offshore wind farms off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria, to be operational in the early 2030s.

The licenses provide Ørsted with site exclusivity to develop the two offshore wind sites. Ørsted’s successful feasibility license applications were assessed through a competitive process. Ørsted’s far-shore project sites are located 56–100 km off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria.

The project will advance with the next steps, which include site investigations, environmental assessments, and supply chain development. Ørsted will support the state of Victoria to achieve the target of 9 GW renewable energy capacity by 2040. The first auction is expected to start in late 2025.

After the  final investment decision, the projects will be completed in phases starting in the early 2030s, with the aim of maximizing dual site synergies through shared resources and economies of scale. Ørsted estimates the cluster has the potential to generate a combined 4.8 GW of renewable energy, which can eventually power the equivalent of four million Australian homes.

Ørsted's Offshore Wind Farm Projects

Ørsted is a leader in executing global offshore wind projects. Here are some of the notable ones:

Borkum Riffgrund 3: This is an under-construction offshore wind farm in Germany. It is adjacent to Ørsted’s existing offshore wind farms, Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Borkum Riffgrund 2. It comprises three offshore wind projects, which were originally awarded to Ørsted in auctions in 2017 and 2018. The project, with an overall capacity of 913 MW, is expected to be fully commissioned in 2025.

Hornsea 3: This project is part of Ørsted’s record-breaking, gigawatt-scale projects in British waters. It follows the successful completion of the Hornsea 1 project.

Hornsea 4: This is another upcoming offshore wind farm in the UK.
