Gotland Administration Approves Aurora Offshore Windfarm

The County Administrative Board of Gotland has recommended that the Swedish government grant permits for the Aurora offshore wind farm in Sweden. OX2 and Ingka Investments are developing the project. Recently, the project received a Natura 2000 permit from the Gotland administration.

If the government approves, the project's first phase could be operational by 2030 and deliver over 6 TWh annually to South Sweden. The entire wind farm is expected to be developed by 2035 and can deliver up to 24 TWh annually.

In connection with its decision, the County Administrative Board of Gotland announced that energy production is an urgent and important public interest and that the wind farm would significantly contribute to electricity production in Sweden.

Project Overview

Aurora is set to be located about 22 kilometers south of Gotland and over 30 kilometers east of Öland in the Baltic Sea. The project's ambitious goal is to deliver over 6 TWh annually to South Sweden by 2030 in its first phase, with the entire wind farm expected to be fully operational by 2035, producing up to 24 TWh a year.

Regulatory Milestones

The project has already achieved a Natura 2000 permit, which affirms that the wind farm can be realized without harming protected species. This permit is one of several required for the project to proceed. With the County Administrative Board's recommendation, the next step is for the government to approve the construction according to the Act of Sweden’s exclusive economic zone.
