GlobalFoundries Receive $1.5 Billion From US Government to Expand Semiconductor Production

Last Updated on 25th June 2024

In a significant move to bolster domestic chip production, the US government awarded GlobalFoundries, the world's third-largest contract chipmaker, a USD 1.5 billion grant. The funding will fuel a multi-pronged expansion plan for GlobalFoundries. A brand new production facility will be built in Malta, New York, while existing operations in both Malta and Burlington, Vermont, will see significant upgrades.

This marks a key implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act, aimed at strengthening American semiconductor supply chains and reducing reliance on foreign manufacturers. The projects, funded under the CHIPS and Science Act, would generate more than 10,000 jobs for a decade.

The microchips will be used in the space and defense industries. "The chips that GlobalFoundries will make in these new facilities are essential chips to our national security," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said to reporters at a briefing.
