Dogger Bank South Offshore Wind Farm Project Achieves Significant Milestone

Last Updated on 11th July 2024

RWE and Masdar have achieved a crucial milestone for their 3 GW Dogger Bank South (DBS) Offshore Wind Farm project. The Development Consent Order (DCO) application for the DBS East and DBS West wind farms has been accepted into the UK Planning Inspectorate examination phases.

Project Location

Both Masdar and RWE reached a final investment decision on the Dogger Bank South Offshore Wind Project. The project is estimated to have an investment value of around USD 14 billion. Furthermore, the joint venture has already begun seabed site investigations for the project.

The DBS Offshore Wind Farm in the UK, located in shallow waters on the Dogger Bank over 100 kilometers off the northeast coast of England, has the potential to provide electricity for up to three million typical UK homes. With the acceptance of the DCO application, the projects have entered the pre-examination phase and will be subject to a public examination later in 2024. The project will now progress through the following stages: securing contracts for difference, project financing, and construction.

Project Details

The DBS Offshore Wind Farms is a joint venture between RWE (51% share) and Masdar (49% share), with RWE leading the development, construction, and operation efforts. Together, the projects will feature up to 200 turbines with a combined estimated capacity of three gigawatts, making them a significant contributor to the UK's renewable energy goals.

The projects utilize cutting-edge technology and equipment to harness the power of offshore wind efficiently and sustainably. In January 2023, RWE and Masdar entered into Agreements for Lease for the two DBS projects with The Crown Estate, further solidifying their commitment to developing these wind farms.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The DBS Offshore Wind Farms are expected to deliver substantial economic benefits to the UK, with an estimated economic contribution (gross value added) of almost USD 1.29 billion, including USD 515 million in the Humber region. This investment will create numerous job opportunities and support local communities during the development and construction phases.

Moreover, the projects will support the UK's net zero ambitions and contribute to a more sustainable energy future. By harnessing offshore wind power, the DBS offshore wind farms will help reduce carbon emissions and promote the transition towards renewable energy projects in the UK.
