The Vijayapura Greenfield Airport, a significant infrastructure project in Karnataka, is slated to commence operations by the end of 2025. With approximately 98% of construction completed, the airport awaits final approvals and equipment before its inauguration.

Located in Buranapur-Madabhavi villages, about 15 kilometers from Vijayapura city, the airport spans 727 acres. Initially designed to accommodate ATR-72-600 aircraft with a ₹95 crore investment, the facility has been upgraded to handle Airbus A320 aircraft following an additional ₹127.9 crore investment from the state government. The infrastructure includes a 1.9 km runway, a passenger terminal, aircraft apron, and car parking facilities, with a peak capacity of approximately 200 passengers per hour.

To meet Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) requirements, the airport must install Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicles and obtain environmental clearance. The government has placed an order for two ARFF vehicles from Austria's Rosenbauer Company, expected to arrive soon. Efforts are underway to secure the necessary environmental clearance to facilitate the airport's inauguration.

Historical Significance and Community Support

The demand for an airport in Vijayapura has been longstanding, with roots tracing back over 50 years. Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty, who has adopted Vijayapura district, has been instrumental in supporting the project's development through the Infosys Foundation. Her advocacy and philanthropic efforts have significantly contributed to the realization of this infrastructure project.

Future Prospects

Once operational, the Vijayapura Airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity, boost tourism, and stimulate economic growth in the area. The Karnataka government envisions future upgrades to transform the airport into an international gateway, further integrating Vijayapura into global travel networks.
