The US administration has approved the seventh largest offshore wind project in the United States, with Ørsted and Eversource developing the 924 MW Sunrise Wind project. Located approximately 48 kilometers east of Montauk, New York, this 12-turbine wind farm is expected to generate enough renewable energy to power nearly 600,000 New York homes.
Furthermore, Ørsted and Eversource have jointly made a final investment decision on Sunrise Wind, solidifying their commitment to building the project. The wind farm is poised to become one of the largest offshore wind farms in the US.
Sunrise Wind is poised to assist New York in achieving its mandate of 70% renewable energy by 2030, while also accelerating the state's growing offshore wind workforce and supply chain. The project will bring USD 700 million of investment to Suffolk County, creating 800 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs statewide. It is anticipated to be operational by 2026.
In addition, Ørsted recently commenced operations at the 130 MW Southfork offshore wind farm. David Hardy, Executive Vice President and CEO of Region Americas at Ørsted, highlighted the significance, stating, "New York is already home to the Southfork Wind project, and with Sunrise Wind, we'll build on that foundation, broadening the economic benefits of offshore wind while delivering far more clean renewable power."
Additionally, Sunrise Wind is entering negotiations with New York State contractors and trade labor organizations on a project labor agreement to cover construction activities for the project.
Renewable Energy Generation: The project aims to generate clean, reliable energy to power nearly 600,000 homes. This aligns with New York's commitment to achieving a carbon-free energy grid by 2040.
Job Creation: The project is estimated to generate up to at least 800 direct jobs through its construction. Additionally, thousands of other indirect and induced jobs will be created to support project work.
Workforce Development: The project has committed USD 10 million for a National Workforce Training Center on Long Island. In partnership with Suffolk County Community College and leading labor unions, the project aims to create training programs that will foster job opportunities for New Yorkers in offshore wind.
Establishment of Operations & Maintenance Hub: A new Operations & Maintenance Hub is being established in Port Jefferson. This is expected to create up to 100 new and permanent full-time jobs, cementing Long Island as a key anchor point for New York’s offshore wind future.
Investment in Upstate New York: The project is investing USD 1 million for workforce development in Upstate New York. It is using Capital Region facilities to fabricate key components for the foundations of offshore wind turbines.
Economic Development: By 2029, at least USD 408 million will be directly invested in New York to spur jobs and economic development.
The Sunrise Wind Project is a significant offshore wind farm initiative that involves several key entities:
Ørsted: A Danish power company, Ørsted is a global leader in offshore wind. It holds a 50% stake in the Sunrise Wind Project. Ørsted's vast experience in offshore wind energy production plays a crucial role in the global wind power market.
Eversource: Eversource is a US-based energy provider with over 100 years of experience delivering power to the region. It also holds a 50% stake in the Sunrise Wind Project. Eversource's expertise in regional energy transmission significantly contributes to the project's success.
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA): NYSERDA promotes the project. It plays a vital role in facilitating the project's development and aligning it with New York's renewable energy goals.
