SSE Pacifico Aims to Develop 6 GW Offshore Wind Farms in Japan

Last Updated on 25th June 2024

SSE Pacifico, the Japanese unit of SSE, will develop 6 GW of offshore wind farms in Japan.  Japan is aiming to become a major offshore wind power producer. This move aligns with Japan's national strategy to become a significant offshore wind power producer, with the government targeting 10 GW by 2030 and up to 45 GW by 2040 as part of its decarbonization efforts.

SSE Aims to Develop 6 GW Offshore Wind Farm in Japan

SSE Pacifico was established in 2021 as a joint venture, with SSE Renewables holding an 80% stake and Pacifico Energy, a local partner with a track record of developing 1.3 GW of solar power since 2012, owning the remainder. "Our official target is to deliver our projects in a pipeline of 6 GW," SSE Pacifico President Dai Karasawa said in an interview.

The company's current pipeline includes a 0.5 GW project off the coast of Mihama in Wakayama prefecture and another 0.5 GW project off Omaezaki in Shizuoka prefecture. Karasawa believes his company provides a powerful combination, as Pacifico Energy can manage the local stakeholders while SSE can contribute to engineering and procurement.

About half of the targeted 6 GW will be fixed-bottom offshore turbines, and the other half will be floating. The government plans to subject approximately 1 GW of offshore wind projects to state auctions annually until 2030.

Despite the country's total installed wind capacity hitting 5.2 GW last year, Japan currently has just 500 MW of offshore capacity. This ambitious plan by SSE Pacifico is a significant step towards achieving Japan's renewable energy goals and transforming the country into a global wind power major.

About SSE Pacifico

SSE Pacifico is a joint venture between SSE Renewables, a part of the UK-listed energy group SSE, and Pacifico Energy, one of Japan's largest developers of renewable energy. The company was formed in October 2021 with the primary aim of delivering offshore wind projects in Japan.

SSE Renewables brings to the table its expertise in developing, constructing, and operating offshore wind farms, while Pacifico Energy contributes its extensive local experience in Japan in local preparatory development work. This synergy allows SSE Pacifico to progress a 6GW portfolio of early-stage development opportunities.

The creation of SSE Pacifico involved the acquisition by SSE Renewables of an 80% interest in an offshore wind development platform from Pacifico Energy. This strategic move has positioned SSE Pacifico as a significant player in Japan's renewable energy sector.
