RWE has commenced the construction of seven new solar and battery storage projects in the UK. These projects will collectively boast 330 MW of solar power capacity and 45 MW of co-located battery storage (BESS). They are slated to be operational by the end of 2024.
These projects mark the inaugural constructions from RWE's solar portfolio, obtained through the acquisition of JBM Solar, one of the UK’s leading independent solar and co-located battery developers. With approximately 3.8 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity and 2.3 GW of battery development projects acquired, RWE has solidified its position as one of the UK’s largest solar developers.
All projects have successfully secured contracts for difference and are being built to allow for future co-location of battery storage (BESS) in areas where it has not yet been installed. This strategic approach aims to optimize grid utilization.
Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, emphasized that the deployment of these seven new projects represents a significant milestone for RWE. She highlighted their role in growing and diversifying RWE's clean energy portfolio through solar and battery power, stressing their crucial contribution to the UK's efforts to decarbonize its power grid and achieve its ambitious net-zero targets.
These new sites will incorporate the latest solar technologies, enabling quick deployment and maximizing their generation potential. Once operational, they will collectively be able to meet the average annual electricity needs of 140,000 typical UK homes.
The primary objective of this project is to contribute to the UK’s ambitious clean energy and net-zero targets. The UK government has set challenging goals to decarbonize its power grid and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. RWE’s new solar storage project plays a crucial role in helping the UK meet these targets.
The project also aims to maximize the use of the grid by facilitating the future co-location of battery storage (BESS) where this is not already being installed. This strategy will allow for the storage of excess solar energy produced during peak sunlight hours, which can then be released back into the grid when needed, such as during periods of high demand or low sunlight.
Another key objective of the project is to support local communities. RWE’s projects will contribute a total of £645,000 in community benefits to the neighboring area, directly supporting local projects. Additionally, the project will create jobs and provide opportunities for local businesses, thereby contributing to the local economy.
Finally, the project aims to establish RWE as a major player in the UK’s solar energy sector. Through the acquisition of JBM Solar, RWE has positioned itself as one of the UK’s largest solar developers. With the construction of these seven new projects, RWE is further solidifying its position in the market and demonstrating its commitment to the growth and diversification of its clean energy portfolio.
