Masdar Plans to Develop 2GW Wind Farm and Battery Energy Storage Capacity in Uzbekistan

Last Updated on 25th June 2024

The Government of Uzbekistan and the UAE energy company Masdar have signed an implementation agreement for the construction of a 2000 MW wind farm. The new agreement also includes the deployment of 1150 MWh of battery energy storage capacity across five Masdar projects in the country.

Masdar and Uzbekistan Cooperation on Grid Connectivity

The 2 GW wind farm will produce enough electricity to power around 1 million homes. The project will reduce 4 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. The deal was signed during the ceremony marking the connection of 1400 MW of Masdar’s clean energy to Uzbekistan’s power grid. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, joined President Mirziyoyev on stage during the grid connection ceremony.

The projects connected to the grid include the Zarafshan wind farm and three solar projects located in Jizzakh, Samarkand, and Sherabad, which are the largest solar power projects in the region.

Masdar has invested around USD 4 billion in Uzbekistan. During his remarks, the President emphasized the unique partnership between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates, which has been in place for a long time and focuses on the development and investment in renewable energy throughout the country.
