Juniper Green Energy Limited has completely commissioned its 100 MWh merchant battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Bikaner, Rajasthan, through its subsidiary, Juniper Green Cosmic Private Limited. The project has emerged as one of the largest operational BESS installations in India.

Project Commissioning Details

The commissioning process was completed in phases, with 60 MWh of the total capacity commissioned earlier in December 2025. Trial operations for the full capacity have been completed, and approval has been secured from the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre.

The battery energy storage system is classified as a merchant project, positioning it to operate in competitive energy markets rather than under long-term power purchase agreements with specific utilities.

Revenue Generation Strategy

The project is expected to generate merchant revenue streams through multiple service offerings. These include peak power arbitrage, which involves storing energy during low-demand periods and selling it during high-demand times when prices are elevated.

The facility will also provide grid-balancing services, helping maintain stability of the electrical grid by responding to fluctuations in supply and demand. Additionally, the project will participate in ancillary service markets, offering specialized grid support services to system operators.

Financial Backing

Earlier this month, Juniper secured Rs 20.39 billion in debt financing from a consortium of global and national financial institutions. The financing arrangement includes participation from the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development, HSBC, DBS, Barclays, and Aseem Infrastructure Finance Limited.

This substantial financial backing demonstrates institutional confidence in the battery energy storage sector and Juniper's ability to execute large-scale energy infrastructure projects. The diverse mix of international and domestic lenders reflects the global interest in India's renewable energy storage market.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

The project is located in Bikaner, Rajasthan, a state that has become a significant hub for renewable energy development in India. The facility's integration with the Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre ensures it can effectively participate in regional electricity markets and provide grid services across northern India.

The merchant nature of the project allows Juniper to capitalize on electricity market price volatility, potentially generating higher returns than with fixed-price contracts. This approach also provides flexibility to respond to changing market conditions and regulatory frameworks in India's evolving energy sector.
