Eni and its partners CNPC, ENH, Kogas, and XRG have reached the Final Investment Decision (FID) to develop the Coral North FLNG project, located deepwater offshore Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique. The signing ceremony took place in Maputo on October 2, 2025, in the presence of the President of Mozambique, Daniel Francisco Chapo, and Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi.

Project Structure and Partnership Details

The Coral North project will extract gas volumes from the northern part of Area 4's Coral gas reservoir in the Rovuma basin through a state-of-the-art floating LNG facility. The project will be implemented by a Joint Venture comprising Eni (50%), CNPC (20%), Kogas (10%), ENH (10%), and ADNOC's subsidiary XRG (10%). Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi stated that the project “leverages Eni's unmatched exploration skills, our trademark fast-track and capital disciplined development capabilities, Mozambique's vast gas resources and its strategic geographic position.”

He added that “with Coral North we will contribute to supply the worldwide growing demand for LNG, doubling both Mozambique's contribution to global energy security, and the benefits for the country and its citizens in terms of economic and industrial growth.”

Production Capacity and Timeline

The Coral North FLNG facility will have a production liquefaction capacity of 3.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). When combined with its predecessor Coral South, the two projects will bring Mozambique's overall LNG production to exceeding 7MTPA, positioning the country as the third-largest LNG producer in Africa. The project is scheduled for delivery in 2028.

Coral North represents Eni's second development in Mozambique and marks the second large-scale FLNG delivered in ultra-deep waters worldwide, with Coral South being the first. The company expects to leverage experience gained from Coral South, which has been in production since 2022, to achieve competitive advantages in terms of schedule, costs, performance optimization, and minimization of execution risks.

Economic Impact and Local Development

The project is expected to significantly boost the Mozambican economy and enhance the competitiveness of local industries. It will create new jobs and opportunities for national enterprises, scaling up the impacts already generated by Coral South and investments in local development projects.

Eni's History in Mozambique

Eni has maintained a presence in Mozambique since 2006. Between 2011 and 2014, the company discovered vast natural gas resources in the Rovuma Basin, including the Coral, Mamba Complex, and Agulha reservoirs, with approximately 2,400 billion cubic meters of gas in place. Coral South was the first project to produce gas from the Rovuma Basin. Beyond energy production, Eni contributes to Mozambique's economic diversification and social development through a comprehensive sustainability plan that improves access to education, health, and water services throughout the country.
