Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a USD 15 billion investment in Japan over the next five years to expand its cloud computing infrastructure. AWS will use the investment to expand facilities in the metropolises of Tokyo and Osaka to meet growing customer demand. Additionally, the company will use investments to develop additional data center facilities and strengthen its business operations.
In light of the proliferation of generative artificial intelligence, Amazon Web Services will increase its investment in Japan in anticipation of a substantial surge in the volume of data processed. Additionally, the company offers generative AI services to Japanese corporate customers, like Asahi Group, Marubeni, and Nomura Holdings.
The AWS Japan unit announced the investment plan during a press conference in Tokyo. Furthermore, the conglomerate has already invested around USD 10 billion in 12 years between 2011 and 2022. Japan is a key market for AWS, as it is the world's third-largest economy and has a large and growing tech sector.
