Top 10 Biggest Solar Farms in Australia (2025)

Western Downs Green Power Hub

The Western Downs Green Power Hub is a 460 MWp solar farm and a 540 MW battery project developed by Neoen near Chinchilla in Queensland. It is one of Australia’s largest solar farms. Construction began in July 2020, and the project was officially opened in March 2023. The Western Downs green power project comprises over one million solar panels spread across 1,500 hectares. 

The hub supplies power to the grid through Power Purchase Agreement (PPAs), including a significant contract with CleanCo Queensland, helping deliver clean, affordable electricity to homes and businesses across the state.

The project is important as it supports Queensland’s target of 70% renewable energy by 2032.

New England Solar

New England Solar is a 400 MW solar and 320 MW battery project near Uralla in the NSW New England region. The project sits across a 2,000-hectare site traversed by an existing 330kV power line owned and operated by TransGrid.

Stage 1 (400MW) solar project was commenced generating clean, renewable electricity in NSW and Queensland in 2023. Whereas the stage 2 (320MW) battery project began construction in 2024 and is expected to be operational by 2026. ACEN Australia (formerly UPC/AC Renewables Australia) is the developer of the project. 

The project is delivered with the support of host landholders, First Nations, and the Uralla community. The New England BESS is being built through the support of the NSW Government’s Emerging Energy Program. In 2023, ACEN Australia secured a 20-year Long Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) for New England Solar in the NSW Government’s first renewable energy and storage auction. 

Rows of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are installed on a single-axis tracking system that follows the path of the sun, while also allowing adequate space for sheep to continue grazing on the land in between and underneath the panels. Over 1.5 million solar panels are installed in this project.

Darlington Point Solar Farm

The Darlington Point Solar Farm is a 333 MW ground-mounted photovoltaic project generating approximately 685,000 MWh annually, sufficient to power 115,700 homes annually. It is located about 10 km south of Darlington Point in the Riverina region of New South Wales. The solar farm spans roughly 1,993 acres on Wiradjuri traditional lands. 

It is developed and managed by Edify Energy, with ownership involving Octopus Investments. The project secured long-term viability through a PPA with Delta Electricity, supplying 150 MW of renewable energy. 

The Darlington Point Solar farm is equipped with nearly one million solar panels and includes advanced grid-supporting features such as synchronous condensers to enhance system strength and stability in the region.

It began commercial operations in August 2020 and is among the largest solar farms connected to the National Electricity Market (NEM)

Limondale Solar Project

The Limondale Solar Farm is a 314 MWac large-scale plant located near Balranald, in New South Wales.  It was RWE’s first Australian project, consisting of about 872,000 solar panels on 770 hectares. It is one of Australia’s largest solar farms, generating enough electricity to power about 105,000 homes per year. The project is built at an estimated cost of USD 150 million.

This generation is helping New South Wales meet the renewable energy targets established under the Government’s Renewable Energy Action Plan. The construction of the project began in 2018 and achieved full commercial operation in 2021. Currently, RWE is also building Australia’s first eight-hour battery at the project site, which is expected to be operational at the end of 2025.

Bungala Solar Power Farm

The Bungala Solar Farm is a 275 MW solar farm that includes 2 subprojects. It is located about 15 km northeast of Port Augusta in South Australia. In 2017, this project was acquired by Potentia Energy (formerly Enel Green Power) in partnership with the Dutch Infrastructure Fund (DIF), followed by the start of construction at the Bungala Solar Farm site. 

The Bungala solar project includes 840,000 photovoltaic modules along with associated civil and electrical infrastructure. In 2016, the project received relevant development approvals from the South Australian Government. The PPA for the project is fully contracted with Origin Energy. The project became fully operational by 2020. It generates approximately 570 GWh, enough to power over 113,000 South Australian homes.

Sunraysia Solar Farm

The Sunraysia Solar Farm is a 255 MWp utility-scale photovoltaic project located near Balranald in southern New South Wales. This project is designed, engineered, and constructed by Decmil across 1,000 hectares, powering 50,000 homes annually. 

It was developed by Maoneng Australia and John Laing Group in partnership. John Laing acquired a 90.1 % interest in the Sunraysia solar farm in October 2018. It comprises 750,000+ solar modules. The project has an offtake agreement with the University of New South Wales and AGL. The project was completed in 2020, and in November 2020, it became fully operational after being approved by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

Wellington Solar

The Wellington Solar Project is a 200 MW utility-scale solar farm developed by Lightsource bp. Initially, the project was co-developed by Lightsource bp and First Solar. Currently, the project is owned by Beijing Energy International Australia, a subsidiary of Beijing Energy International Holding. It is located on approximately 316 hectares along Goolma Road in Wuuluman, New South Wales.

The project received its development consent on 25th May 2018 and began construction in December 2019. The project became fully operational in 2022. The solar project comprises 1,200,000 solar modules.  

Suntop Solar Farm

The Suntop Solar Farm is a 189 MWp solar project located near Wellington in New South Wales. It is owned by Berkshire Hathaway and Polpo Investments with a satke of 76% and 24% each.  Initially, it was developed by Recurrent Energy, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar and Photon Energy Australia. 

The project spans approximately 450 hectares, comprising of ground-mounted photovoltaic array and single-axis tracking. It is designed to produce around 395 GWh of clean electricity annually that will power more than 65,000 homes.

The project is equipped with high-efficiency Canadian Solar CS3W-MB-AG BiHiKu panels and developed with a rigorous site selection and planning process. The project commenced construction in late 2020 and progressed towards commissioning in May 2022. 

Coleambally Solar Farm

The Coleambally Solar Farm is a 189 MWp solar farm project located in New South Wales’ Riverina region. Developed across 550 hectares, this solar farm generates enough renewable energy to power 65,000 homes in New South Wales. 

The project entered full-scale commercial operation in November 2018. It is connected to  TransGrid’s high-voltage transmission network. The project comprises 567,800 solar photovoltaic panels and generates over 390,000 MWh of clean electricity annually.

The project was developed entirely by Neoen Australia and backed by a 12-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with EnergyAustralia, which secures 70% of the farm’s energy output, while the remainder is sold on the open market.

The construction of the project began in early 2018, with site preparations in January, and full build and grid connection achieved from March through September 2018.

Finley Solar Farm

The Finley Solar Farm is located approximately 6 km west of Finley in New South Wales, with a capacity of 175 MW. It achieved full-scale commercial operation in November 2019 following John Laing’s 100% acquisition of the project in November 2018. It is spread across 385 hectares and comprises 500,000 solar panels supplied by Canadian Solar.

This is one of the several solar farms in the Riverina region, including the Sunraysia solar farm that is part of the New South Wales Governmentʼs South West Priority Energy Zone.
