Foxconn has received approval from the Karnataka state government to invest an additional USD 1.7 billion in its mobile phone manufacturing operations in the state. As the world's largest contract manufacturer, Foxconn assembles approximately 70% of iPhones. The State High-Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC) approved Foxconn’s proposal for this additional investment.
The extra capital expenditure will be used to construct a manufacturing facility in Devanahalli, where Foxconn has acquired 300 acres of land for development purposes. In November, the iPhone manufacturer announced its intention to increase its market share in India by allocating an additional USD 1.6 billion towards infrastructure projects.
Last year, the government of Karnataka unveiled Foxconn’s USD 600 million project to establish two semiconductor component manufacturing factories. In one plant, Foxconn will collaborate with Applied Materials Inc. to manufacture semiconductor equipment, while in the other unit, Foxconn will create mechanical spaces for the iPhone.
Foxconn's additional investment in Karnataka is a positive development with the potential to bring significant economic benefits to the state and India as a whole. The investment offers considerable potential for job creation in Karnataka, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing and related sectors. The new market trends in the semiconductor industry play a major role in these investments.
Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., is a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer with a diverse and interesting background. Foxconn is the world's largest electronics manufacturer, producing a wide range of devices for major brands like Apple, Sony, and Microsoft. Apart from the project in Karnataka, Foxconn plans to invest around USD 194 million to build a semiconductor facility in Tamil Nadu. This project will focus on manufacturing electronic components and is expected to generate 6,000 jobs.
