Project Overview

The OranjeWind Offshore wind farm project is a joint venture between RWE & TotalEnergies, with a 50-50% share. It is a 795 MW wind farm project located off the coast of the Netherlands.

The project is expected to start in 2026 and be fully commissioned by 2028. It has an annual power generation of approximately 3 terawatt-hours, enough to supply more than one million Dutch households. It has a grid connection capacity of 760 MW. During low production periods, it has an excess capacity of 35 MW to utilize the connection capacity smoothly.

The project serves as a blueprint for integrating a wind farm into the Dutch energy system. It helps address the problems posed by shifts in power generation from wind and by flexible energy demand. The goal is to match scattered wind power generation with flexible energy demand to contribute to grid stability.

For this purpose, partners RWE & TotalEnergies will supply their allocated parts of the flexible system, including integration solutions such as electrolysers, battery storage, e-boilers, and smart charging, in multiple locations in the Netherlands.

OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm Location

The OranjeWind Offshore wind farm project is located in the North Sea, approximately 53 kilometers off the coast of IJmuiden in the Netherlands. It is within the Hollandse Kust West VII site.

Placed about 80 km from Den Helder port, it supports logistical access from nearby ports, such as Eemshaven (construction staging) and Den Helder (O&M base).

Project Background

The OranjeWind Offshore wind farm project originated in 2022, with RWE winning the tender to develop the Hollandse Kust West VII site. It is a German energy company with a great experience in offshore wind projects.

In 2024, TotalEnergies, a French multinational energy firm, entered into a partnership with RWE, sharing a 50:50% stake in the OranjeWind project. The partnership marks the first collaborative offshore wind endeavor between the two companies in the Netherlands, leveraging RWE's leadership in development, construction, and operations.

The project aligns with the Netherlands' ambitious offshore wind targets, which aim to install 21 GW by 2030 as part of the broader European push for net-zero emissions. It also aims to produce green power and hydrogen, while supporting the stability of the Dutch grid through its electric boilers and battery storage.

OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm Current Status

As of January 2026, the OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm project is in its pre-construction stage. It is expected to begin its construction later in 2026, and turbine installation in 2027. As for preparations, production planning is complete, the port logistics setup at Eemshaven and Den Helder is in place, and TenneT's grid connection is nearing completion.

Project Scope

The following is the project scope of OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm:

  • Grid Connection: The wind farm is connected through TenneT's offshore AC substation and transmission system.

  • Wind Turbines: 53 × Vestas V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines will be installed.

  • Foundations: 53 monopile foundations (supplied by Sif Holding, including secondary steel components such as ladders, boat landings, and platforms).

  • Inter-Array Cables: Approximately 114 km of inter-array cables to connect turbines to the offshore substation

  • System Integration and Innovation: The project combines offshore wind with flexible demand assets, including electrolysers for green hydrogen production, e-boilers, battery storage, EV-charging solutions, and a demonstration floating solar farm to balance intermittent generation and support grid stability.

  • Ports and Logistics: Marshalling and pre-assembly at Buss Terminal Eemshaven; operation and maintenance base at the Port of Den Helder (Blue Port Centre), using a Service Operation Vessel (SOV).
