Sri Lanka Wind Power Plant Industry Analysis
The wind power industry in Sri Lanka has experienced modest growth in recent years, as the country looks to diversify its energy mix and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. Sri Lanka has set ambitious renewable energy targets, with a goal of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020 and 30% by 2030. To achieve these goals, the government has been supporting the development of wind power projects across the country.
There are currently over 50 wind turbines operating in Sri Lanka, with a combined capacity of around 150 MW. The majority of these turbines are located in the western and southern parts of the country, in regions such as the Western Province and the Southern Province. The largest operational wind farm in Sri Lanka is the Puttalam Wind Farm, which is located in the Puttalam District and consists of 50 turbines with a combined capacity of 100 MW.
In addition to these operational wind farms, there are several other wind power projects in various stages of development across Sri Lanka. The most advanced of these is the Western Province Wind Farm, which is currently in the construction phase. This project consists of 25 turbines with a combined capacity of 50 MW and is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 35,000 homes.
Overall, the wind power industry in Sri Lanka is making progress towards meeting the government's renewable energy targets. While there are challenges to overcome, such as the need to secure funding and navigate the planning process, the potential for wind power to contribute to the country's energy mix is significant. With the continued development of wind power projects, Sri Lanka is well on its way to becoming a leader in renewable energy.
