How efficient are natural gas power plants?
A Simple cycle gas plant is less efficient than a combined cycle plants. The combined cycle power plants are more efficient because a simple cycle plant is connected to a combustion engine to create hot exhaust gases that boil water to produce steam. This steam makes additional electricity, thus enhancing overall energy efficiency.
The dispatch of electricity in a simple cycle plant is faster than coal-fired plants. The grid is often connected to renewables like solar and wind power to meet the fluctuating electricity demands known as peaking power.
A combined cycle power plant operates on a Rankine cycle and uses exhaust gases and steam to help generate electricity, thus enhancing overall efficiency. A recuperator captures waste heat from the turbine system and compresses it before entering the combustion chamber. An HSRG uses waste heat to produce steam to boil water and produce electricity. These water boilers are referred to as heat-recovery steam generators.

The first contract, with Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), entails delivering up to 800,000 tons of LNG annually to India for ten years, starting in 2026. The second agreement is a Heads of Agreement (HoA) with Korea South-East Power, which involves delivering approximately 500,000 tons per year of LNG to South Korea for five years beginning in 2027.

Scarborough LNG Project in Australia
Woodside Energy Group Ltd. has signed a USD 1 billion loan agreement with the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to develop the Scarborough LNG project.
