The United Kingdom has one of the largest wind turbine manufacturing markets in the world. The growth of these wind turbine manufacturing facilities rests upon the UK’s ambitious renewable energy goal to double onshore wind and quadruple offshore wind capacity by 2030.

According to the Blackridge Wind Database, the UK has an onshore wind farm capacity of 15.5 GW and an offshore wind capacity of 14.7 GW as of 2024. To achieve the ambitious goal of 2030, the UK government is working with different stakeholders in the market, including wind turbine manufacturers. The government is funding GBP 86 million (USD 108 million) for test facilities for offshore wind turbines that can hit higher capacities.

The top five wind turbine companies in UK include Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, GE Vernova, Nordex and Senvion. Let’s explore wind turbine manufacturers/suppliers and the turbine market in the UK.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy is the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the United Kingdom, with an installed capacity of 16 GW as of 2024. The company is a forerunner in wind turbine technology in the UK, solidified by the multi-award-winning RecyclableBlade introduced in the market. The turbine blade was manufactured in a state-of-the-art Siemens Gamesa facility at Hull’s Alexandra Dock.

The B108 IntegralBlades is one of the largest wind turbine blades in the UK offshore wind market, and they are 108 meters long. These blades were selected by RWE for 44 SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines to be installed at the Sofia offshore wind power project. The wind turbine company was also the supplier for the world’s largest offshore wind farm in operation Hornsea 2.

The UK’s largest wind turbine manufacturer invested GBP 186 million to produce next-generation blades in their facility in Hull in 2023. Siemens Energy continues to support onshore and offshore wind in the UK, producing more than 1,500 offshore wind turbine blades in Hull since its opening in 2016.

In March 2025, Siemens Gamesa celebrated the installation of its 5000th offshore wind turbine at the 1400MW Sofia wind farm project off east England. It claims its turbines have powered 27 million homes and avoided 139 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions around the world.

GE Vernova

GE Vernova is the spinoff of the American energy giant General Electric, which was formed in 2024. GE has set its footprint in the UK energy market for more than 100 years and also contributed significantly to the offshore wind energy in the country.

GE Renewable Energy invested GBP 15 million in the UK for innovation, research & development to test offshore wind turbine nacelles and blades in recent years. In October 2023, GE Vernova achieved the milestone of installing the first Haliade-X offshore wind turbine for the largest offshore wind farm under construction in the world, the Dogger Bank

The turbine was one of the first of the next-generation wind turbine generators at 13 MW+ to become operational at sea and the largest ever installed in European waters.

General Electric company is contracted to deliver 277 turbines for the 3.6 GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm, which is built in three phases. The windmill will use a mix of 13 and 14 MW Haliade-X turbines to power the equivalent of 6 million UK households or about 5% of the UK’s electricity demand.

The wind turbine manufacturer is committed to testing Haliade-X 12 MW technology through a partnership with Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult. GE is also funding the research in collaboration with the University of Sheffield to improve the operation, reliability, and performance of next-generation offshore wind turbines.

The company's commitment to skills development is evident through its dedicated Training Academy in Haslingden, which will be expanded in 2025 into a cutting-edge wind training centre in Scotland.

Senvion S.A.

Senvion S.A. (REpower Systems SE until 2014) is a German wind turbine manufacturer founded in 2001 in Germany. REpower Systems made its presence in the UK wind turbine market in the early 2000s. The German company operated as a subsidiary of Suzlon from 2007 to 2015 to manufacture onshore and offshore wind turbines in UK.

The company reached the historic milestone of 1 GW installed capacity across UK wind farms in 2010 and became the third manufacturer in the UK to achieve this. The manufacturer had a number of wind farm projects in its portfolio in England, Scotland, and Wales. These include the Penny Hill wind farm developed by Banks Renewables, which features six 3.4M104 turbines.

Wind Turbine Market in the UK

The wind turbine market in the UK has the trend of a few market players holding the majority of the share. The dominant players in the UK market include Siemens Gamesa, Vestas, and GE Vernova. Most of the companies have been familiar with the wind turbine market in the UK for more than 40 years. They strive in the market for expertise with new turbine technology introduced year by year.

According to Blackridge’s UK wind power report, the wind energy sector has an expected CAGR of more than 6% during the forecast period 2022-2027. Since 2015, the cost of new offshore wind has dropped by 50%, making it one of the cheapest renewable energy sources in the UK, even cheaper than new gas and nuclear power.

Between 2016 and 2021, nearly GBP 19 billion was invested in offshore wind. The offshore wind industry will strive in the near future with upcoming offshore wind projects in the UK. The UK's floating offshore wind project capacity is growing rapidly and is expected to reach over 4 GW  by 2029.
