California High-Speed Rail (Full System)

The California High-Speed Rail (HSR) Full System is the largest infrastructure project in the U.S. designed to connect the state’s major population and economic centers. The fully electrified rail network spans over 800 miles (approximately 1,287 km) with up to 24 stations.

Phase 1 of one of the largest construction projects, focuses on the 494-mile corridor from San Francisco/Merced to Los Angeles/Anaheim, aiming to reduce travel time between these major hubs from 10 hours to just 3 hours. 

Phase 2 will expand the line from Merced to Sacramento and from Los Angeles to San Diego via the Inland Empire. This future expansion will complete the full 800-mile system and improve statewide connectivity. 

California high speed rail project details: 

  • Project update: Construction in Kern County, Caltrain electrification, 18 grade separations, Palmdale–Burbank clearance.

  • Economic benefits: 14,700 jobs created, USD 21.8 billion in economic output, and 99% ROW acquisition for Merced–Bakersfield.

Sound Transit 3 (ST3)

Sound Transit 3 (ST3) is one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects in the United States, aiming to expand the mass transit system in the Seattle metropolitan region. The plan will extend the Link light rail system by 62 miles (100 km) and add 37 new stations, ultimately creating a 116-mile (187 km) light rail network expected to serve 600,000 daily passengers. 

The plan for ST3 was formally adopted in 2016 and, following a 2021 board decision, is now scheduled for full buildout by 2046. Beyond light rail expansion, ST3 invests heavily in BRT systems on State Route 522 and Interstate 405. 

Also, it upgrades to Sounder commuter rail, including longer platforms and extended service. Once completed, ST3 will connect 16 cities by light rail, 30 cities by BRT and ST Express, and 12 cities by commuter rail.

  • 62 new miles of light rail, totaling 116 miles with over 80 stations.

Los Angeles Metro 28 by '28 Initiative

The Los Angeles Metro 28 by '28 Initiative is a wide infrastructure effort aimed at completing 28 major highway and transit projects across Los Angeles County ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The infrastructure project aims to boost regional mobility, connectivity, and long-term infrastructure resilience with an estimated total cost of USD 42.9 billion. While 20 projects are already on track for completion by 2028, USD 26.2 billion in advanced funding is still needed to accelerate the remaining eight projects, many of which are complex megaprojects. 

In March 2024, the Metro Board, one of the biggest construction projects, updated the project list to ensure alignment with the 2028 Mobility Concept Plan (MCP), replacing any projects unlikely to meet the Games deadline with viable alternatives that better match current priorities.

Texas Central High-Speed Railway (Dallas–Houston)

The Texas Central High-Speed Railway is a transformative infrastructure project that aims to connect the major metropolitan areas of Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston via a 240-mile high-speed rail line. The project aims to reduce the travel time between the two cities to less than 90 minutes. 

Led by Amtrak and Texas Central Partners, LLC, this privately proposed initiative will feature cutting-edge Japanese N700S Series Shinkansen technology. Trains are planned to run every 30 minutes during peak periods and every hour during off-peak hours, with a 6-hour nightly window reserved for system maintenance and inspection.

A major milestone for the mega project was achieved in September 2020 when the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) issued the Record of Decision (ROD) and the Rule of Particular Applicability (RPA). 

A Boston Consulting Group report projected that the Dallas-to-Houston high-speed rail line could boost Dallas County’s GDP by USD 5 billion annually from 2029 to 2050. The project will support 28,300 new jobs and attract 3 to 6.5 million riders in its first full year of operation, expected in 2035. 

Recently, the project faced a setback when the U.S. The Department of Transportation withdrew a USD 63.9 million grant previously awarded to Amtrak for its development.

Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in U.S. history and the most significant in New York City since Rockefeller Center. The project, part of a broader redevelopment initiative led by the State of New York, is situated on 28 acres above a working rail yard on Manhattan’s Far West Side. 

Hudson Yards is built on two massive platforms supported by 300 caissons drilled into bedrock, bridging over 30 active train tracks and several rail tunnels. As part of its integration with future transit, the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing Section 3 (HYCC-3), essential to the Gateway Tunnel project, is now over 50% complete and expected to finish by 2026.

The USD 19 billion project led by Grimshaw and Mott MacDonald includes the complete modernization of terminal infrastructure, runway expansions, enhanced ground transportation, flood resilience, and environmental sustainability. 

Central to this vision is the replacement of outdated terminals with four modern, common-use terminals that support international air traffic and accommodate larger aircraft. A new centralized ground transportation hub, redesigned terminal roadways, and express rail connections to Manhattan will streamline passenger movement.

Hudson Tunnel Project (Gateway)

Brightline West High-Speed Rail

Brightline West is a landmark infrastructure project that aims to establish America’s first true high-speed passenger rail system, connecting Las Vegas, Nevada, to Rancho Cucamonga, California. The rail project spans 218 miles primarily along the median of Interstate 15. 

The rail line will ultimately connect with Metrolink's San Bernardino Line at Rancho Cucamonga, offering passengers a seamless connection to Los Angeles and the greater Southern California region. 

Construction of Brightline West officially began on April 22, 2024, following the award of a USD 3 billion grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in December 2023. The project is expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2028, with a construction timeline of approximately four years.

SunZia Wind and Transmission Project

The SunZia Wind and Transmission Project is set to become the largest clean energy infrastructure project in U.S. history. It combines large-scale wind energy generation with a high-capacity transmission system to deliver renewable power across the American Southwest. 

The project led by Pattern Energy and supported by partners including Hitachi Energy, Quanta Services, and POWER Engineers, aims to generate over 3,500 megawatts (MW) of new wind energy in rural New Mexico, and transmit that power through a ±525 kV High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line spanning approximately 550 miles into Arizona. 

Construction of the project officially launched in 2023, with commercial operations targeted for 2026.

Los Angeles Metro D Line Extension

The Los Angeles Metro D Line Extension, formerly known as the Westside Subway Extension or the "Subway to the Sea," is a transformative transit project in Los Angeles. The project aims to improve mobility across one of LA's busiest corridors. 

The project, led by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), extends the existing D Line (formerly Purple Line) westward from Wilshire/Western in Koreatown to the Westside.

Funded through local sales tax measures Measure R and Measure M, the project is one of Metro’s highest priorities, promising to offer a fast, reliable, and high-capacity rail connection between Downtown LA and the Westside.
