India aims to meet the Net Zero 2070 goals through several upcoming green hydrogen projects across the country. National Green Hydrogen Mission is an action plan to build a green hydrogen ecosystem & green energy corridor to replace fossil fuel imports and derivatives like petroleum, refinery, steel manufacturing, and fertilizer production.

By 2030, a global demand of 100 MMT (Million metric tonnes) of green hydrogen and its derivatives, like green ammonia is expected. Building the green hydrogen economy, aiming for about 10% of the global green hydrogen market, India can export up to 10 MMT of green hydrogen/green ammonia per annum.

Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian government announced and awarded several projects. Below is the list of seven upcoming green hydrogen projects in India:

Green Hydrogen Projects by Ohmium and Tata Projects Partner to Develop  in India

Ohmium International and Tata Projects have formed a strategic partnership to advance green hydrogen projects in India. Ohmium will supply modular, scalable PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyzers, while Tata Projects will handle EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction). This collaboration aims to enhance green hydrogen capacity and efficiency, supporting India's sustainable energy goals and expanding the green hydrogen market. This renewable hydrogen project seeks to promote the usage of clean hydrogen and green hydrogen hubs in India.

Green Hydrogen plant by CIAL and BPCL - Kerala

Cochin International Airport (CIAL) is the world's first fully solar-powered airport. On 14th February 2024, CIAL agreed with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)  to set up a green hydrogen plant in the airport premises. The Cochin International Airport will be the world's first operator to have a hydrogen power generation facility. Currently, the Cochin airport has a 50 MW solar power generation and a solar park producing 2,00,000 power units a day. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aims to complete this 100 MW green hydrogen project by 2025. Under this agreement, BPCL will ensure the establishment of an integrated green hydrogen plant.

Current and Future of Green Hydrogen Sector in India

In India, about 5 MMT of grey hydrogen is consumed annually, of which about 99% is used in petroleum refining and ammonia production. Ammonia produced from hydrogen is a key component of fertilizer manufacturing, and it is used in urea and other fertilizers. By 2030, India aims to capture 10% of the global green hydrogen market by exporting 10 MMT of green hydrogen/green ammonia annually.

Through several green hydrogen projects announced, India aims to expand its green hydrogen industry and achieve reduced carbon emissions. Under the National Hydrogen Mission, about 50 MMT of carbon emissions will be suspended. The green hydrogen production capacity will generate about 6 lakh jobs with a total renewable energy investment of INR 8 Lakh Crore (USD 9.6 Billion) investments.

Conclusion

The Green hydrogen projects in India can be a key to building a low-carbon green hydrogen economy. Scaling up green hydrogen production and utilization across the country in various sectors will make India the Global Hub for renewable sources like green hydrogen production, usage, and export of its derivatives. Under the National Hydrogen Energy Mission, these initiatives will contribute to becoming Aatmanirbhar (self-reliant), thus promoting global green hydrogen transition.
