Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran stated at an investment summit on Wednesday that the Tata Group is nearing an announcement regarding the construction of a new semiconductor fabrication plant in the Indian state of Gujarat this year.
The comments came during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. A global business event was held in Gujarat. Natarajan Chandrasekaran stated that the group is on the verge of announcing a huge semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat.
Additionally, Chandrasekaran also mentioned the commencement of construction of a 20 GW battery storage factory in Gujarat in the next couple of months.
Apart from this, during the summit, South Korea’s Simmtech stated that it would open a chip component plant in Gujarat alongside the upcoming semiconductor testing and packaging facility of U.S. chipmaker Micron.
Gujarat, the western Indian state known for its industrial infrastructure, is rapidly emerging as a frontrunner in the country's semiconductor market. In July 2022, Gujarat unveiled a dedicated semiconductor policy offering attractive incentives and subsidies to entice chipmakers to set up bases in the state. This policy, valid until 2027, is seen as a game-changer in attracting global players.
Gujarat boasts excellent port infrastructure, abundant land availability, and a skilled workforce, making it an ideal location for establishing semiconductor manufacturing units.
The state already houses a thriving electronics manufacturing sector, with major players like Samsung, LG, and Foxconn having set up plants. This existing ecosystem provides a strong foundation for the semiconductor industry to flourish.
